Default categories
Every site starts with four standard categories:| Category | Consent required | Typical contents |
|---|---|---|
| Necessary | No (always on) | Session cookies, CSRF tokens, load balancing, consent state itself |
| Preferences | Yes | Language choice, region, UI settings |
| Statistics | Yes | Google Analytics, Matomo, heatmaps |
| Marketing | Yes | Meta Pixel, ad retargeting, cross-site identifiers |
Creating and editing categories
Create or edit
Click Add category for a custom purpose (for example, “Personalization” or “Social Media”), or edit an existing one. Set the display name, description, and translations. The description appears in the preference center, so write it for visitors, not lawyers.
Mapping cookies to categories
Cookies detected by the cookie scanner are auto-classified using TruePrivacy’s tracker database. You can override any classification:- Open Cookie Banner → Detected Cookies.
- Click a cookie and choose a category from the dropdown.
- The mapping is persisted and carried forward across rescans, so your manual corrections survive future scans.
- Which scripts the banner blocks until consent.
- Which cookies appear under which group in the public cookie declaration.
- Which per-category toggle controls the cookie in the preference center.
